On Saturday 18th, February ‘Born to Perform Stage School’ opened its doors for the first time ever! Students aged five to thirteen gathered at Sevenoaks Primary School, eagerly waiting to attend our free taster workshop. With their dancing shoes at the ready and a bucket load of enthusiasm…. we were ready to go!
Once everyone had registered we began the day with a thirty-minute singing session, which was led by Miss Olivia. The students participated in a vocal warm-up and learnt the basics of how our voice works. We had a great time singing the song ‘Revolting Children’ from the hit musical ‘Matilda’ and a lot of the students were feeling brave enough to volunteer themselves for a solo!
After this, we continued to work on the same song but now focusing on the choreography for the number. The children were fantastic at learning the dance routine and creating and developing their rebellious school children characters. We put the entire piece together with singing, choreography, acting and blocking and it looked brilliant - considering they had learnt it all in one hour!
The taster ended with our Drama session, which was led by Miss Gabby. The students explored storytelling and fairy tales, as well as creating and developing characters. We had such a variety of characters from Wicked Witches, Fairy Godmothers and even a few animals! The children loved exploring different narratives in their groups and used freeze-frames to present their pieces to everyone at the end. We even had some props and costume bits that the children used to help them get into their roles. It was great fun and it was lovely to see everyone encouraging one another.
Overall, the taster day was a highly enjoyable experience for both students and teachers and congratulations to all that came. It was a great success and the feedback we received was very positive. Since, we have had lots of children enrol for the new term, which is fantastic as they will all have parts in our summer show…soon to be announced!
